June swept by quickly and July looks to be a very hot month. Most people think that the dog days of summer have something to do with the temperatures being so hot that dogs lay around panting but instead the dog days refer to the dog star, Sirius, and its position in the constellation Canis Major (Large Dog). Sirius is so bright a star that the ancient Romans thought it radiated extra heat toward Earth but actually the tilt of the Earth explains why these days tend to be the summer‘s hottest.
Now that we know where the phrase comes from, we can go through July not thinking about the heat but all the fun we are going to have. We thought about ways to stay cool with many outdoor activities involving fishing and swimming and we will not only be celebrating Independence Day this month but National Ice Cream, Hot Dog, Lasagna, and Cheesecake days as well. Bon Appetit!
Enjoy the dog days of July the month that begins with a roaring bang and ends with a bark.
